Eating Disorders at University

No matter who you are, or what you have been through during your life, you will find that starting university is a scary, stressful and exciting time – all in one go. If you have had to deal with an eating disorder, then this adds another level of stress onto it – as a change in routine can often be damaging to recovery, or make issues with eating or body image worse. With this being the case, we have put together a few tips that should help you with this, so if this is something that you struggle with, this page will help you get through university.

Consider different treatment options

If you are currently being treated, your current treatment plan might not fit with your new lifestyle, so you should be as open minded as possible. See your doctor, and listen to what they recommend. It could be the perfect time to change the treatment that you are having.

Get any on-campus support that you can

There will be a medical department at your university, possibly even a disability support services. It is essential that you make the most of what is on offer here, as they will be able to give you a huge amount of help and advice, and could help to get you through your course.

Seek the support of your new friends

It may take you a little while to realise who you best friends will be at university, but as soon as you feel like you can trust people enough to open up to them, it is essential that you do this. They may even come along to support groups with you, and will be able to lend an ear whenever you need somebody to talk to during term time, so having a group of people who you get on with is key.

Don’t commit to too much

When you first start at university, you will have the chance of joining all kinds of clubs – but you should make sure you don’t do too much. Your days will be filled with lectures, and you will have to complete reading, assignments and revision, so planning something for every evening and weekend is just going to lead to you burning out within a few weeks.

Make time to relax

This is linked to the point above, but you really need to make the time to relax during your course. University allows you to decide how you spend your spare time, and some people will simply want to work every spare minute to get the best marks. This isn’t an effective method as you will tire yourself out, so you should make sure that you have time in every single day where you can be in a relaxing and comfortable environment.

Although your eating disorder won’t leave you when you go to university, you can certainly take control of it and make sure it doesn’t control you. These tips are great, and will allow you to make the most of what could be some of the best years of your life.
